Week 1: Stowe-Marketing

This week I worked with the marketing department at Stowe Mountain Resort. I had a real interest in the marketing side of the industry and was very excited to see what marketing positions entail. Tuesday morning we set out at 6:30 and arrived promptly at 8:00. We went inside and met Josh to take us to our various departments. I was brought over to Spruce Peak and to a trailer where there are offices. There I met David who works with the marketing department. He showed me around his office building and I met many of the people who work there. Then he told me about the two events that would be held on Saturday. There was the second jam in the Rail Unveil and an ice sculpture competition. We drove down to the purchasing building to pick out prizes for the jam and pick up the sound system. After picking out the prizes we headed up to Mountain Ops to sit in on a meeting where they talked about snowmaking, grooming and upcoming events at the mountain. After the meeting and a lunch break I met with Kim who also works with marketing, I also met Michael Colbourn who is the VP/Director of Marketing, Sales and Communications. I looked over a spreadsheet so the prizes I picked out could be approved. Thursday I met with David over by where the jam was going to be set up. I helped with setting up the tent and PA system. After watching a bit of the jam I made my way over to the Ice sculpture. I helped Kim by taking photos. One of the biggest things I learned is that Marketing works on a lot for the events.

How did the department(s) you worked with at your resort relate to the following?

1.     Sustainability – Good marketing of any event or even the mountain in general keep money flowing, which goes towards financial sustainability.
2.     Service – Marketing tells the outside world about what services are available.
3.     Safety – With the proper preparation of events you can keep everyone and everything safe.
4.
How did the department(s) you worked with support/benefit the following?
1.     The consumer/guest – They know what to expect when coming to the even and resort. Good marketing has comprehendible and accessible information.
2.     The employee/associate – With proper planning they know where to be and what to do.
3.     The owner/shareholder/management – Happy customers and workers make more money and a better resort.
