Jay Week 4 & 5: Rentals, Hotel and Customer Service


Last weekend I was supposed to be in rentals but they were down staff on the Tram so I filled in there. 
This weekend I was in hotel and rentals. Both were pretty slow but they taught be what they do, and how their computer systems work. 


How did the department you worked with at your resort relate to the following?

1.     Sustainability- Hotel is economically sustainable. 
2.     Service-provides accomidations for guests. 
3.     Safety-All of the lifts have a variety of safety checks on a regular basis. Also they have many safety features built in.

How did the department you worked with support/benefit the following?
 4.     The Consumer/Guest-gives guests a place to stay when at resort for long times. 
5.     The Employee-provides jobs
6.    The Owner- It keep guests happy and coming back.

Jay Week 3: Lifts, Patrol, and Terrain Park


Lifts
How did the department you worked with at your resort relate to the following?
 
1.     Sustainability- The lifts are economically sustainable. When people come to a ski resort the first thing they pay for is a lift ticket.
2.     Service-I worked at the tram. It services about 55 people every trip. It is slower than the Flyer, but shields the wind, gives access to the tram house, and bring you to trails you couldn't otherwise access.
3.     Safety-All of the lifts have a variety of safety checks on a regular basis. Also they have many safety features built in.

How did the department you worked with support/benefit the following?
 4.     The Consumer/Guest-The lifts can make or break a resort. Its how all the guests get to the top of the mountain to ski or ride down.
5.     The Employee-It employs many people
6.    The Owner- It keep guests happy and coming back.

Ski Patrol
How did the department you worked with at your resort relate to the following?

1.     Sustainability- Keeping guests safe keeps them coming back.
2.     Service-Provides safety
3.     Safety-Attends to guests in need of help and assistance keeps trails safe and put into place the correct warning. I helped with training for toboggans, they make sure everyone is certified and well versed in bringing injured people down. 

How did the department you worked with support/benefit the following?

4.     The Consumer/Guest-Keeps guest’s safe
5.     The Employee- The ski patrollers are respected so they are happy.
6.     The Owner-keeps guests safe and returning, which makes more money. The owners know the great service of not only ski patrol but trail maintenance.

Terrain Park
How did the department you worked with at your resort relate to the following?

1.     Sustainability-provides more consumers
2.     Service- makes jibs, jumps, and other park features
3.     Safety-makes all features safe. The park crew has to do regular trail checks to make sure everything is hitting right and is safe.

How did the department you worked with support/benefit the following?

4.     The Consumer/Guest-give guests variety of terrain
5.     The Employee-gives jobs
6.     The Owner-gives resort a new appeal and the owner more guests

Jay: Week 2: Ice Haus & Nordic Center


Friday: I worked with ski school. I met up at 9:15 with a lesson. I shadowed a beginner lesson. Then we broke for lunch. After lunch I shadowed an expert lesson. Learning the differences of how they address each person was cool so see. While shadowing I got to improve my snowboarding skills

How did the department you worked with at your resort relate to the following?

1.     Sustainability-makes money.
2.     Service-provides information
3.     Safety-keeps skiers and boarders safe during lessons about how to deal with different situations on the mountain

How did the department you worked with support/benefit the following?

4.     The Consumer/Guest-Teaches how to ski/board
5.     The Employee-gives them good feeling of teaching someone.
6.     The Owner-good staff gives positive image of resort

Saturday I went to the ice Haus and the Nordic center. The ice Haus was having a tournament. So there wasn’t much to do. I watched about how to sharpen skates, and learned their computer system. I also helped them clean a bit. Then in the after noon I went to the Nordic center and learned about what they do. I gave people some equipment and got to take a lap on Nordic skis which I hadn’t done before.

How did the department you worked with at your resort relate to the following?

1.     Sustainability-both areas make money
2.     Service-provide skating and Nordic and snowshoeing
3.     Safety-provides safe environment

Jay Week 1: Waterpark


Friday- We left school at about 8:30 and headed over to Jay. Upon getting there we met with Tom McGrail. He told us about how our rotation will work, and about what departments we will be working with. We then continued a project that the other group was doing. The project was creating emergency bags to be kept at the top of the tram. This is because the Tram House had been re-done and the fire marshal said they had to have these bags. We all worked to complete putting together these bags. We broke for lunch then went on a tour to the contacts at each department. We then got to take runs for the rest of the afternoon.

Saturday- We left school around 7:15 and made our way to Jay. I was assigned to the water park. On Saturday the waterpark doesn’t open until 10am, and I arrived at 8:30. There was how ever an in-service, that the lifeguards have to attend weekly. I sat in on this one and learned about MSDS, and about blood born pathogens. We then watched two films about how to and how not to lifeguard and how certain events can affect many people. The staff then had their morning meeting, and then they prepared for the guests to arrive. The preparation consists of cleaning up any messes, and testing all slides and features. I started with shadowing Chuck, who is a lead guard. He was in charge of Zone 1; I followed him as he explained what he was doing. Primarily he checks on the lifeguards to make sure they are okay, and that everything is going well. I also got to go to the arcade for a bit and hear about what they do in there, Justin showed me around. Then I went to meet with Steve who works in the maintenance room, he told me about the machines what they do. Then we went on two service calls, there was a drained plug that he had to fix, and the baby-changing table in the family restroom was out of order. I also followed Shawna who was another lead guard to see what she did. Lastly I worked at the front desk, and they told me about their system and how everything runs, while there Anna brought me to the vault to see where it is. Overall I learned about the waterpark and all of its in and outs.

Week 5:Stowe:Ski Patrol


Friday when we arrived at MOC we met with Josh and headed over to get our tickets. He told me I would be working with Ski Patrol. Frist Nate, Corbet, Lawrence and I got to take a few runs. Then we went back to MOC and I met up with Karen, who works with the risk management department, she previously worked at a ski patroller. We headed right over to Spruce side to do an incident investigation (II.) They do one whenever someone breaks something, an ambulance is involved, and any injuries not on the slope. This one was a slip and fall, where a lady left the restroom and was headed to the parking lot and slipped and fell. Now the incident investigator doesn’t work with the guest, a ski patroller took care of her. We waited for the ski patroller to finish with the guest. While we were waiting a man came into the ski patrol hut with an arm injury, he had fallen and put out his arm to catch him self and he landed the wrong way. We then talked to the ski patroller who attended to the slip and fall, and then we went over to take a few photos of the area that she fell in. They do this primarily to cover themselves insurance-wise. While taking photos a fire alarm went of at the Sunny Spruce lift, we went over to make sure they did everything correctly according to protocol. Then we headed back to Mt. Mansfield where Josh took me up to 269 which is the main ski patrol station at the top of the four-runner quad. On the lift he told me a bit about where each ski patrol hut is located. There I went on three calls. The first was a woman called ski patrol about a lost son. We went down and met the woman while other ski patrollers did a sweep of the area he was last seen. Once we met with the lady she got a call from her son saying he was fine and safe waiting at the bottom. The next was a girl who went on the wrong lift and felt uncomfortable with the terrain so we took her down on a toboggan. The last thing I did was another II of a rail that a person hurt his wrist on. We took dimensions of the rail, the jump, and the landing. We took the pitch of those three components and we took photos.

1.     Sustainability- 269 is heated by the quad. Keeping guests safe keeps them coming back.
2.     Service-Provides safety
3.     Safety-Attends to guests in need of help and assistance keeps trails safe and put into place the correct warning.
